"The Laboratory of Medical Zoology (LMZ) is a research laboratory and outreach operation at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Our focus is on the ecology and evolution of zoonotic disease, with primary emphasis on tick-borne disease and human malaria. As part of our mission to educate the public and convey information about risk and exposure to tick-borne disease in the Northeastern US, we established a tick ID and testing service in 2006. We are a not-for-profit operation that provides this service to individuals for a fee to offset costs of testing. All results are provided confidentially to clients, and data summaries are posted on our web site to help educate the public about the distribution and abundance of ticks and disease. While primary attention has been on Lyme for several decades, we are following very closely the increasing incidence of Anaplasma, Babesia and viral pathogens in these ticks. The TickEncounter Resource Center is a very impressive presence and resource and we are pleased and honored to partner with them."
