Volunteer Opportunities
Each semester we have opportunities for volunteer classroom tutors, computer support aides, and more. Our volunteers come from various community service learning programs on campus like IMPACT! and Citizen Scholars. Check out the options below. We’ll train you. You can earn credit too! Our volunteers gain great experience in cross-cultural and intergenerational communication, as well as an understanding of workplace education. Work study possible. Our on-campus classes include basic English (ESOL); reading, writing & math literacy; computer skills; leadership; career growth; communication & diversity training, problem-solving, a worker radio show on WMUA and more. The classes are for adult learners and held usually in South College 109 or 115.
English Tutors:
Our English (English for Speakers of Other Languages) tutors help those who are learning English. Assisted by ESOL instructors, you can tutor either in the classroom, 1-on-1, or a small group of adult learners. Flexible schedules are possible for 1-on-1 sessions, if available.
Qualifications: * Read, speak and write English fairly fluently * Patience, and sensitivity towards different cultures * Dependability and willingness to help others learn
Days/Times: a) ESOL intermediate: Mo./Wed. 1-3 p.m., b) ESOL Beginning level: Tu./Th., 1-3 p.m. c) 1-on-1 tutoring early evening (i.e. 5:30ish) Minimum Hours per week: 2, Maximum Hours per week: 4
Computer Literacy Tutors:
Our computer literacy tutors help workers gain skills using MS Windows, WORD, EXCEL,Keyboarding skills, UMail and the Web. They help one-on-one while assisting the instructor. Flexible schedules are possible.
Qualifications: Basic knowledge of computers, WORD, Excel (helpful), email (UMail) and the Web * Patience, and sensitivity to diverse workplace culture * Dependability and willingness to help others learn
Days/Times: Computer Literacy for Everyone, Tu. 8:30-10:30 a.m. ; Word & Excel, Th. 8:30-10:30 a.m., Keyboarding Skills and Shortcuts, Th. 8:30-10:30 a.m. Minimum Hours per week: 2, Maximum Hours per week: 4
Computer Application Skills Tutors:
Our computer application class tutors help workers gain skills using other computer software such as website design programs (Dreamweaver), online applications like Office on web, Google docs, blogs, and other digital tools (for digital image creation) and more. They help one-on-one while assisting the instructor.. Flexible schedules are also possible.
Qualifications: More in depth knowledge of computers, web site design (Dreamweaver), digital devices or digital image creation/manipulation * Patience, and sensitivity to diverse workplace culture * Dependability and willingness to help others learn
Days/Times: Intro to Facebook!, Th. 8:30-10:30 a.m.; MS Office 2010 Pro, Tu. 11-1 p.m.; Cloud Computing: Google Docs & MS Office web apps Th. 11-1p.m.; Digital Photography Basics, Mo. 9-1 a.m. Minimum Hours per week: 2, Maximum Hours per week: 4
Computer Support Aides (Work Study possible)
We need computer savvy students to assist tech staff with software problems and anti-virus updates, Facebook and/or website design and maintenance, etc. Very flexible schedule.
Qualifications: Familiarity with Facebook, MS WINDOWS, Office Suite (WORD, Excel, etc.) UMail, IE, Firefox, Chrome, McAfee & other anti-virus software preferred, but not required * Experience with Adobe Suite, Dreamweaver, etc. and related apps a plus
Days/Times: Flexible to fit your schedule.
ABE Tutors (NOT offered in 2011/12 academic year):
Our ABE (Adult Basic Education) tutors help workers improve their reading, writing and math skills as well as computer & email as needed. Assisted by an ABE instructor, you can tutor a small group or one-on-one. Flexible schedules are possible.
Qualifications: * Fluency in English * Basic knowledge of computers and email (UMail) * Patience, and sensitivity to diverse workplace culture * Dependability and willingness to help others learn
Days/Times: Spelling, Reading, Writing, and Email Basics class, Tu./Th. 8:30-10:30 a.m. Minimum Hours per week: 2, Maximum Hours per week: 4
