Text Box: Foundation Funds LMWEP National Writing Effort NEW YORK — Recently, the Cummings Foundation awarded UMass and our program a grant to launch the National Writers Online Project. We’re working with programs across the country to compile online the very best in worker writing. To that end, we launched our first online course last semester (actually a hybrid course with both online and classroom elements). Keep an eye out for announcements for the soon-to- be launched national workers writers’ web site! Text Box: Don Sullivan Manager, Custodial Services On learning… Learning is just a good thing; it makes people feel better. In this department, it can be the same old thing day after day. Classes break up the monotony. I see my staff thrilled to learn in LMWEP classes. On LMWEP… I sincerely appreciate LMWEP and the people who run it. It’s just a pleasure to work with LMWEP. On a personal level, I’m glad there’s a resource I can support. I really appreciate the program. On the LMWEP Custodial Supervisory Course … Your perfect vision of what we are trying to achieve was very evident as the different segments touched on all the aspects we wanted these potential supervisors to become familiar with. The feedback was tremendous from all participants. I sincerely thank LMWEP for their outstanding efforts in establishing this very important and much needed class. On Workplace English… Your Workplace English courses are very beneficial to our workers and to us − it’s a huge value to have that resource here. A lot of people might complain if a person’s English isn’t as great as it could be, but you know, for me, if a person is going to work their butt off for eight hours and has trouble with English, so be it — I’ll take the hard worker anytime. But with your program we can help with English language at the same time. Also, those ESOL courses spur our workers to keep going to more advanced courses. On Custodial Staff and LMWEP… My staff take LMWEP classes, and then go back and talk about what they’ve learned. Their enthusiasm encourages others to get involved as well. More people are interested in climbing the ladder. Taking LMWEP courses has knocked down some of the walls and helped people overcome fears of trying for advancement or a promotion. Now they’re more able and willing to take a chance. On challenges… My challenge is to get people to challenge themselves.
