The Five College Arabic Language Initiative
The Five College Arabic Language Initiative now includes four Five College Lecturers in Arabic. Through this arrangement, students may pursue four years of study of Standard Arabic. Each Lecturer is hosted by one of the Five Colleges, and teaches both at the host institution and at another one of the Five Colleges. Such a rotation benefits students by making available different localized versions of Arabic (e.g. Levantine, Moroccan, Lebanese, etc, as spoken by one or another of the Lecturers).
We are very pleased that as of Fall, 2011, Five College Lecturer in Arabic Ms. Nahla Khalil from Egypt will be hosted by the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at UMass Amherst. Five College Lecturers in Arabic offer courses that involve reading, writing, verbal expression and verbal comprehension, the four skills needed to communicate in Arabic both orally and in writing. Dr. Khalil's office is located in Herter 428. She may be reached at 413-545-5811 or nkhalil@llc.umass.edu
