Thinking Through Nationalism and Mysticism: The Tangled Intellectual Biographies of Gershom Scholem and Hans Kohn - a symposium with Amir Engel (Hebrew University) and Adi Gordon (Amherst College)

At a time when Gershom Scholem established the academic study of Jewish mysticism, Hans Kohn pioneered the academic study of nationalism. The biographies of these two German-Jewish intellectuals intersected: as Zionists in Central Europe and later, in Palestine, as advocates of bi-nationalism.

This event brings together the authors of two exciting new intellectual biographies: Amir Engel (Hebrew University of Jerusalem) author of Gershom Scholem: An Intellectual Biography (University of Chicago Press, 2017) and Adi Gordon (Amherst College), author of Toward Nationalism's End: An Intellectual Biography of Hans Kohn (Brandeis University Press, 2017).
