Yasuko Shiomi received a B.A. in English and American Literature at Nara Women’s University in Japan and an M.A. in Japanese language and pedagogy at the University of Wisconsin Madison. She has been teaching Japanese language at UMass Amherst since 2013. Before coming here, she taught Japanese at Harvard University for six years and Vanderbilt University for three years. She has been teaching Japanese at the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University’s summer program in Beppu, Kyushu since 2013.
Her research interests include Japanese linguistics, pedagogy, and Second Language Acquisition. Recently, her interests have diverged into many subjects such as teaching Japanese related to specific fields (such as social studies, business, literature, etc.), kanji teaching, Japanese teacher training, etc.
