First-Year Student Application Dates

The Housing Preference Application will be available on SPIRE Thursday, June 1st, 2017 through 11:59pm on Friday, July 14, 2017. All applicants will receive an Assignment Notification with their On-Campus assignment and roommate information on SPIRE on Friday, August 4th, 2017. First year students will be assigned to spaces within the Residential First-Year Experience; more information about this program can be found here

Submitting a First-Year Student Preference Application 
New undergraduate students will request on-campus housing using the Housing Preference Application on SPIRE. Students will receive their NetID and password for SPIRE after their admissions deposit is processed. Roommate Search
Available June 1 - July 14

Some undergraduate students are interested in seeking out potential roommate opportunities for fall 2017.  Students can create a profile for Roommate Search in SPIRE under Main Menu>Housing.  As part of Roommate Search, students will answer a comprehensive set of questions about themselves and about their preferred roommate.  After completing the questionnaire, students will receive a list of other new students who match their criteria.  They will also receive contact information and can have a discussion about whether they are interested in being roommates.  If both students mutually agree, they can request they can request each other as roommates on the Preference Application.

McNamara Hall - Home of the Transfer Community
Residential Life Student Services will guarantee an on-campus assignment to all transfer students who submit an on-time preference application.  McNamara Hall is a suite style building located in the Sylvan Residential Area.  All of the bedspaces in McNamara Hall are dedicated to new incoming transfer students.  Currently McNamara houses the UMass Community College Connection program and the Engineering Residential Program.  For more information on eligibility and applying to either of these programs, please see below.

What are Sylvan Suites?
Suites have a combination of standard single rooms, one deluxe single room and shared rooms.  They include a common room set up like a living room with couches and tables that can be used for study or socializing, and a bathrooom that you only share with your suitemates which is cleaned regularly by staff.

Late Applicants 

All Late Applicants seeking on-campus housing will need to log on to SPIRE under Main Menu>Housing to sign the Residence Hall contract and submit the Housing Profile before proceeding with the following steps. August Change Process

Priority Appointment Request: August 4th – August 6th (Late requests accepted through August 10th)
Appointment Post: August 7th by 3pm
Room Selection: August 8th – August 13th

Cancelling Your Housing Contract

New students may cancel their preference application without charge by contacting the Residential Life Student Services by phone until 5:00pm, Thursday, January 12, 2017. Students who decide not to attend the University or not to live in on-campus housing and who receive an assignment on January 13, 2017 will be subject to the cancellation fee schedule below. To cancel your Housing Contract, call Residential Life Student Services at (413) 545-2100.

$500 Cancellation Fee Period
        Begins Upon Check-In
        Ends 5th week of Spring 2017 semester

Please note: Contacting another department on campus including the Admissions Office and the Registrar's Office does not constitute a cancellation request. As stated in the Housing Contract, the student must contact Residential Life Student Services directly by calling 413-545-2100 or emailing living@umass.edu to request a cancellation.
