The new building will be the on-campus home for the Power and Class of New England, the University of Massachusetts Minuteman Marching Band, one of thirteen collegiate marching band programs nation-wide to be awarded the Sudler Trophy by the John Phillip Sousa Foundation.
The building will provide for the Marching Band a place with visibility and presence that provides a single home for the entire Band's needs in one place, a large indoor practice and performance space that can contain the entire 300- strong marching band, and two smaller group practice spaces. Also, the building incorporates the existing Grinnell Arena practice space for the band fabulous percussion section, room for storage of instruments, uniforms and music, and proper office and conference space for band staff. This build will be fully accessible to people with physical disabilities.
• Use of Existing Site: UMMB building will repurpose an existing campus site which will promote the use of existing infrastructure, protect greenfields and preserve habitat and natural resources.
• Located Near Public Transportation: UMMB will help promote the use of public transportation by locating near existing public transportation options that will reduce the impacts from automobile use.
• Bicycle Storage: The project will have bicycle storage for the whole band promoting the use of non motorized transportation.
• Reduce Irrigation Needs on Campus: By using drought tolerant plants the landscaping will not require permanent irrigation thus reducing the amount of potable water used on site.
• Plumbing Fixture Selection: Through the use of highly efficient plumbing fixtures UMMB will reduce potable water use by a calculated 47,800 gallons annually reducing water consumption by a calculated 37.6%.
• Energy Efficiency: The project is designed with high efficient mechanical system, increased insulation, aggressive glazing choices and efficient lighting design that will reduce the overall energy cost by greater than 31.7% versus the LEED base case.
• Construction Waste Management: UMASS and its contractor have committed to recycle at least 75% of the construction waste produced during the construction process, which will reduce the burden on the local landfills.
• Material Selection: The building has been designed to maximize the use of materials with a high recycled content thereby reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials. There was also a preference shown towards regionally extracted and produced building materials that will reduce the environmental impacts resulting from transportation and help support local economies. The design team has taken extra efforts to reduce the source of indoor air pollutants, by eliminating the use of paints, adhesives, and carpeting materials which might “off-gas” high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This will make for a healthier indoor environment and a better learning environment.
Indoor Environment Quality:
• Proper Ventilation: The ventilation strategy has been designed to provide fresh air at least 30% above the required rate. This will make for a healthier indoor environment and a better learning environment.
• Good Indoor Air Quality: The contractors will implement a construction IAQ management plan that will help sustain the comfort and well-being of construction workers and building occupants.
• Occupant Comfort: The building has been designed to provide controls for occupants to adjust lighting and temperature levels to suit individual needs thus increasing overall occupant comfort. To confirm a high level of occupant satisfaction UMASS has agreed to implement a thermal comfort survey once the building is occupied.
• School as a Teaching Tool: The building will be used as an educational tool to educate visitors on the benefits of sustainable design and highlighting the green building features.
