The UMass Amherst Bike Share program is officially up and running. As of Monday, October 3rd, students have free, daily access to a bike, lock and helmet.
The Bike Share program is managed by the Student Government Association and has received support from the Physical Plant. Located in the Student Union, the SGA office will be the location for the bike check–out system, free of charge with a UCard.
The cruiser-style bikes were purchased from Worksman Cycles, an American company with a factory in New York that uses a solar arrangement for 25% of its electricity. The bikes have been assembled by the UMass Amherst Bike Co-op.
Bikes are housed outside the student union secured to a dedicated covered bike rack. Students are encouraged to use the borrowed bikes as an alternative to traditional transportation options.
