The LEED Professional Credentials indicate professional excellence and a strong depth of knowledge as well as practical understanding of the LEED Rating Systems and how they apply to the high-performance design and construction of the built environment.  Preparing to take the LEED Green Associate and AP exams requires more than taking one course – it is a process that involves acquisition of disciplinary knowledge and understanding of complex building and environmental systems.  This course introduces core concepts of the USGBC Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) Rating Systems and assists students with study and preparation for the LEED Green Associate exam.  It is sponsored by the USGBC MA Chapter – West Branch, facilitated by green building design and construction professionals with LEED credentials, and has a track record of student success.

Proposed time: Monday 5:30PM – 7:00PM

Location: Holdsworth Hall 312A

Instructor: Craig Nicolson with Jeffrey Dalzell, AIA, LEED A.P. and Ludmilla Pavlova-Gillham, AIA, LEED A.P. BD+C

Required Texts and Materials: Green Building and LEED Core Concepts Guide, LEED Green Associate Study Guide and extensive online study of the following websites:  www.usgbc.org, www.gbci.org, and www.leedonline.com

Prerequisites: Senior and graduate students with basic knowledge in building design, construction, engineering, landscape and environmental science.  Membership in the USGBC MA Chapter is highly recommended http://usgbcma.org/.  This course is also open to local building practitioners.

Course Requirements: Course is A/Fail.  Attendance is required and students who miss 3 sessions without prior authorization will fail.  Students are required to individually register to take the LEED Green Associate Exam at www.gbci.org, by mid-semester.  Successful completion of the exam results in an A grade.

Course Components: This is a self-directed, participatory study group.  Members of the USGBC MA Chapter – West Branch will facilitate discussion with slide presentations and access to reference documents. Participants are expected to come to each session having reviewed the assigned chapters from the two textbooks and having prepared questions for discussion and clarification.

Student Fees: Check for $80 at first class, includes membership in the USGBC MA Chapter.  Textbooks can be purchased at first day of classes for $125 (bulk purchase cost) or $145 if individually ordered through www.usgbc.org.  All checks are to be addressed to USGBC MA Chapter, P.O. Box #2771, Woburn, MA 01888. Exam registration fee:  Exam costs: Application fee is$50 and Exam fee is $150 at www.gbci.org.

Grading and Evaluation: Pass A/Fail.  Passing the course is contingent upon attendance, mid-term registration for the LEED Green Associate exam and passing the exam by end of the term.
