The Sustainability Steering Commmittee was assembled in January of 2011 as part of the reorganization of the Campus Sustainability Initiative. Representatives from the Student Government Associaition, including the Secretary of Sustainability, senior members of the Sustainability Initaitive Fellowship Program, Green Building researchers, UMass Permaculture leadership and the Eco-Rep Program Manager populate the committee.
The mission of the Sustainability Steering Committee is to plan, coordinate, and support sustainable initiatives in the UMass Amherst community. Our goal is to foster a sense of proactive social and environmental responsibility as well as a desire to create plausible positive changes on and around campus. The SSC serves as a coordinating group to keep all represented organizations updated on plans for various events and projects on campus. This sort of consultation will lead to a greater trend of collaboration and support between groups with sustainable agendas. Through our efforts we hope to initiate and assist sustainable change by students and for students within and surrounding the UMass Amherst community.
