The Linguistics Major

Course requirements: 37 credits distributed across a group of required courses, a language requirement, and a group of elective courses.

I. Required courses: 17 credits:

  • LING 201 Introduction to Linguistic Theory
  • LING 401 Introduction to Syntax
  • LING 402 Speech Sounds and Structure
  • LING 414 Introductory Phonetics for Linguists (4 credits)
  • LING 510 Introduction to Semantics (4 credits)

II. Language requirement: 6 credits from any combination of the following:

  • Courses on a language other than English at the 300-400 level
  • Courses on the structure of a language other than English
  • LING 404 Field Methods

This language requirement for the major is in addition to the general Arts & Sciences foreign language requirement. Courses taken to fulfill this requirement do not count towards the elective requirement under III.

III. Elective courses: 15 credits:

The elective courses are taken from the following offered within the Department of Linguistics, with the proviso that majors are encouraged to take 6 credits in courses offered outside the department, especially in the domain of cognitive science. A listing of typical courses can be found below, but majors should in all cases consult the undergraduate adviser before taking such "external" courses, so that their suitability can be assessed, and explicit approval obtained. Similar prior approval must be obtained for courses offered by the Department of Linguistics that are not in these lists.
