Airports

There are a number of airports with ground transportation services to Amherst, MA: (i) Bradley International, located in Hartford, CT, (ii) Logan International, located in Boston, MA, (iii) JFK International and La Guardia, located in NY, and Newark, located in NJ.

You can fly into Hartford (BDL), Boston (BOS), or New York (JFK, LGA, EWR). BDL is definitely the closest airport (about 1 hour by car, more by bus) if you can get decent connections to it. Boston is farther (about 2+ hours by car, more by bus) but has many more incoming flights and it's not too hard or long to get here from Boston. New York is farther still (3+ hours by car, more by bus) but JFK is still the best option from some international locations; it is longer and a bit harder to get here from there. Connecting flights from New York to Hartford exist but are sometimes unreliable, so ground transportation, while long, is safer.

The ground transportation options below all end up with one of two companies getting you into Amherst: Peter Pan Bus Lines or Valley Transporter. Peter
Pan Bus Lines brings you into Amherst, with stops in town and at UMass. Valley Transporter provides door-to-door service.

OPTION #1: Valley Transporter

• Direct, hourly service to/from Bradley international.
• Travel time:
• Cost: $35 one way (7am-9pm EST); an additional $5 for hours outside these times; no student discount

• Direct (twice-a-day) service  to UMass, Amherst.
• Travel time: 1 hour 5 minutes (evening)- 2 hours 20 minutes (morning)
• Cost: $19 one way,

OPTION #1: Valley Transporter

• Direct, but non-scheduled service between Boston international and your destination.
• Travel time: 2 hours.
• Cost: $160 one way (7am-11pm EST); an additional $50 for hours outside these times; no student discount.

South Station-Amherst

It is also possible to take the train or the bus from South Station. To get from the airport to South Station, which provides bus service:

• Take a taxi: Costs about $15.
• There's a free shuttle service (Routes #22 or #33) from the terminal to the subway station "Airport" (blue line). Take subway to subway station "South Station" (orange line). OPTION #2: Peter Pan Bus

• Direct, almost hourly service (from bus terminal) to UMass, Amherst (for schedule details, log on to website)
• Travel time: 1 hour 55 minutes-3 hours 10 minutes, depending on schedule.
• Cost: $25 one way; 15 % discount for students.

• Cost: $57 one way/$110 round trip (JFK/LGA-BDL); $63 one way/$122 round trip (EWR-BDL); an additional $50 for hours outside these times; no student discount.
