We'll look to current linguistic theory to answer questions about how speakers use language to structure and control discourses. Students will pick up skills that are vital to understanding how to structure effective arguments. They will discover why information structure can be a matter of life or death (politically, socially, literally). Intuitional, corpus, and experimental data will be used to examine issues in pragmatics and discourse processing. This course fulfills the Junior Year Writing requirement.


Fulfills Junior Year Writing requirement and Gen Ed Interdisciplary (I) requirements.
