414 Intro Phonetics for Linguists (4 units)Fall 2012Meetings MWF 2:30-3:20 - Machmer W-25 Instructors Discussions Disc 1: Lab W 3:35-4:25 (Presley Pizzo; ) Machmer W-25 Description This course will survey the variety of human speech sounds, from the very common bilabial stop to the exceedingly rare bilabial click, and in doing so, systematically describe their articulation, acoustics, and perception. Students will learn to transcribe and produce unfamiliar sounds, and to use a variety of tools for analyzing speech. The final project for the course will be a description of the sounds of an unfamiliar language. |
