Description

This course provides students with hands-on experience in linguistic analysis and theory construction. Students will elicit, record and transcribe language data from the speaker of an unfamiliar language, both in class and in individual sessions outside of class. Under the guidance of the instructor, students will complete small assignments describing and analyzing certain basic aspects of the language. In addition, students will also take on an individual, final project describing and analyzing some aspect of the language's phonology, morphology or syntax. The class as a whole will also work towards the creation of a dictionary and a syntactic corpus for the language, and students will be given assignments that contribute to these projects.
