The topic of this research seminar varies from year to year, so it may be repeated for credit. This course is typically a cooperative venture, with faculty, students, and visitors contributing the result of their research. Spring 2011: Sources of Universals Where do universals of sound systems come from? How are they accounted for and explained? The recent literature offers several ways of explaining universals: formal, phonetic, historical, and developmental. Participants in this seminar will read some of this literature and assess the contributions that it makes. A further goal is to understand whether these various explanations are competing or complementary.
