614 Intro to Phonetic Theory (3 units)Spring 2010
MW 2:30-3:45 - Hasbrouck Lab Add 104B
This course looks at how speech is produced, what it sounds like, and how it's perceived. In each domain, the focus is theoretical as well as descriptive, as elsewhere in linguistics. General principles are used to explain the phenomena that we observe in speech production, acoustics, and perception. Considerable attention is paid to the phonetic explanation of how sounds pattern phonologically in languages, to the phonetic definition of distinctive features, and to how phonological representations are implemented phonetically.
