Past Semesters:

Check the Registrar's information and your own schedule using SPIRE for the most up to date class information. For more information about other majors and minors, check out the Undergraduate Program Guide.

If the class is full, contact the professor to find out whether they do a waiting list ahead of time, or only at the first class meeting. Plan on checking online through your add period, and plan on attending the first class. Be prepared with an alternate course in case you don't get in. Feel free to contact the office to get a sense of how likely it will be that you'll get a slot (i.e., if you are trying to get Lyrics and the Law in Spring 2007, we would discourage anyone beside graduating seniors from even attemtping to get a slot).

Be aware that if there are spaces available online and you are unable to add the class, several factors may be involved.

  • You don't have the prerequisites.

Check on Spire for the class details. Is the course restricted to majors? To specific class years? Note that freshmen can't take Legal 250. Seniors are given access after Sophomores are added to registration. Legal 450 requires freshman writing and Legal 250 as a prerequisite. Many of our courses are offline to non-majors. And/or require Legal 250.

Note that for some courses that are not full, some prerequisites may be taken off toward the end of Registration (April or November), and during Add/Drop (January and August). It's always worth checking back. Example: Legal 250 will not let in Seniors until after the Sophomores have had a chance to enroll during Registration. Classes with plenty of space will be opened up to non-majors.

  • The course was full on the first day of classes, and taken offline. We take most of our classes offline on the first day of classes; this allows instructors to create their own waiting list and take into account the needs of those seeking to get in (graduating seniors, etc.). A class may have 5 openings, and a paper waiting list of 20. Plan on attending the first class to see how the instructor will be handling their waiting list. We encourage all seniors and Five College Students to attend the class to assess their chances of being added.

If an instructor grants you permission to be added to the course, he or she will need to contact Amity in the Main Office in writing or by email. Alternately, have them sign a "Department Override" form, availble in Room 102, Gordon Hall. Please check your schedule on Spire close to the end of add/drop to make sure all overrides have been processed. If it's not on your schedule by the end of Add/Drop, you will have to walk through a late Add form, getting the instructor's signature and the signature of your Academic Dean. Alternately, if you notice a class on your schedule after Add/Drop that you are not actually taking, you will need to contact your Academic Dean to correct this mistake.

As always, please call the Legal Studies Main Office at 413-545-0021 if you have any questions.

Reminder

Independent study courses (ex. 496) and pass/fail courses do not count toward Legal Studies Major Requirements.  If you have any questions about your major requirements or clearance for graduation, please contact Tami Paluca at 413-545-9698.

The Main Office is now located at 102 Gordon Hall. We moved out of Hampshire House in August, 2003.

The Department of Legal Studies is part of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences
