Of Note in the Department
- An historic mural from Northern ireland/The North of Ireland, "Painting From the Same Palette," will be unveiled at the University of Massachusetts Amherst on April 28, 2008 during events celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Good FridayAgreement. Recently completed, the mural was painted by two artists whose communities were previously at war. For her contribution, the mural was presented by the artists to Leah Wing of NCTDR. - Ethan Katsh, Alan Gaitenby and the National Center for Technology and Dispute Resolution have had the NSF grant with which they are affiliated continued.
- Bernie D. Jones has been awarded a short-term research publication grant
from the American Association of University Women, in order to prepare
a manuscript for publication--Policing the Color Line: Southern
Justices on Miscegenation in the Antebellum Will Contest. She is
exploring the use of will contests as a means defining families in the
antebellum South, where elite white men sought to use the law of wills in
order to grant freedom and property to slave women partners and their
children, where family was defined and limited by race and class status.

- Judith Holmes and Farid Benavides-Vanegas were both nominated for the Distinguished Teaching Award in 2004.
- The Center for Information Technology and Dispute Resolution (CITDR) and the UMass Electronic Enterprise Institute (EEI) are joint recipients of a $100,000 one year grant from the National Mediation Board to assist NMB’s efforts in designing and using online dispute resolution systems. /more/
