Title: Assistant Professor – Cultural Heritage Studies
Appointment: Academic Year (9-month) – Tenure Track
Available: September 1, 2010

The Position: The focus of the position is on cultural heritage planning, design and management. Candidates with a specialization in community-based design, planning, and economic development are encouraged to apply. Teaching responsibilities will be at the undergraduate and graduate levels with potential courses including: planning and design studio, cultural resource management, research seminar(s) and study abroad courses. The candidate will be expected to collaborate with the newly established Center for Heritage and Society (www.umass.edu.chs/index.html) and help it re-envision the role of faculty and students in the arena of global and domestic heritage. Outreach will include working with the Center to serve local, national, and international communities and organizations that engage in heritage work. The candidate is expected to develop a funded research program dealing with planning, design, and management of cultural heritage landscapes and/or communities.
Qualifications: A Masters of Landscape Architecture (MLA), Urban, City or Regional Planning (MUP, MCP, or MRP) or a closely related field in cultural studies. Preferred qualifications include: a doctoral degree in a landscape architecture, planning or a closely related field; a demonstrated capacity for teaching; professional registration and/or significant professional experience; a demonstrated capacity for scholarly research; demonstrated ability to attain external funding to support research.
Salary: Competitive and commensurate with experience.
The Setting: The Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning is one of the few programs where planning and design are in the same academic department, and enjoys a national and international reputation with a focus on sustainability. The Department has accredited programs in Landscape Architecture (MLA, BSLA), and Regional Planning (MRP). We also offer a PhD in Regional Planning, a B.S. in Environmental Design and an Associates degree in Landscape Contracting. The Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning is located in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The University of Massachusetts Amherst is the flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts system and is part of the Five-College Consortium in the beautiful Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, with excellent social, cultural, and recreational amenities. We are two hours from Boston and three hours from New York City.
