Landscape Architecture (BS)

Overview
Students who enroll in the program as freshmen can earn a B.S. degree in Landscape Architecture in four years. In addition to the University's General Education requirements, the landscape architecture core curriculum consists of three inter-related areas or sequences as follows:

Design Studio Sequence. (12 courses)
This is the core of the landscape architecture program. Students learn the principles, methods, processes, and techniques of landscape architecture design. Each studio provides progressively more complex problems with most studios divided into two seven-week segments. Each segment has a different instructor to insure a diverse range of project types, scales, and points of view.

Natural and Cultural Factors Sequence. (7 courses)
Acquaints students with the natural and cultural processes that have shaped the landscape from past to present.

Professional Skills Sequence. (7 courses)
Teaches students the skills and knowledge required to implement landscape architectural projects. Includes courses in graphics, construction materials, site engineering, landscape structures, and professional practice.

History Sequence. (2 courses)
Provides students with an understanding of the historic forces that have shaped the man-made environment and the role that landscape architects have played.

Department Information
The BS in LA program is part of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning, within the College of Food and Natural Resources. The Department was founded by Frank A. Waugh in 1903 as an undergraduate program in Landscape Gardening, the second such program in the country. Over the past 90 years, the Department has grown substantially, changed its name, and developed a number of distinct programs which can offer the student a rich environment for studying and gaining professional skills in all areas related to the environment.

The Department offers degrees in seven separate programs in addition to the B.S. degree for landscape architects. There is one other undergraduate major (Environmental Design), an associate's degree program (Landscape Contracting), and three graduate programs (Landscape Architecture, Regional Planning, and the Doctoral program in Planning) The Department also maintains academic ties with many other departments on campus that focus on natural resources (for example, Forestry and Wildlife Management, and Plant and Soil Sciences).

Curriculum for Transfer Students from Stockbridge

This is a typical curriculum for students with an associate degree from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture. This assumes that the students had the equivalent of Land Form (LA253), Soil(PS105), and Plant Identification (ED335). Stockbridge transfers should check their general education requirements carefully. Depending upon the courses taken, one additional GE course beyond what is shown may be necessary to meet the university graduation requirement.
