Grants and Internships Available through the James Rose Center

Grants

In order to promote excellence in contemporary garden design, the James Rose Center is pleased to offer its second annual garden design awards program. Students in landscape architecture design programs with garden design studios are eligible. Participation is simple. Landscape architecture instructors need only send a syllabus of their garden design studio to Dean Cardasis to apply. Grants of $250, plus a certificate from the James Rose Center will be awarded through your program to the student whose work in garden design studio, in the instructor's opinion, best exemplifies the following:

  1. Spatial clarity
  2. Responsiveness to the unique characteristics of their site
  3. Expression of contemporary cultural issues in design
The studio instructor decides the winner based upon these simple criteria. The James Rose Center asks only for a copy of the winning drawings (and/or photographs of models) for our records. The James Rose Center will be giving several such awards annually, beginning this coming academic year. To apply, please send your garden design syllabus to Dean Cardasis at the following address no later than September 30, 1995.

Internships

There are several paid summer internships awarded to undergraduate and graduate design students each year. Preference is given to UMass Larp students, but students from other schools are also encouraged to apply. Summer interns work on various research projects at the James Rose Center in Ridgewood, New Jersey, or with Professor Cardasis in Amherst, Massachusetts. For more information, contact:
