The Last Green Valley: Charlton, Massachusetts

As part of Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs (EOEA) continuing promotion of watershed planning and community preservation, this report was developed by a Spring 2002 Landscape Planning Studio at the Department of Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning at the U. of Massachusetts Amherst under the direction of Professor Jack Ahern.
Charlton, Massachusetts, is a rural community located in the southern part of Worcester County in southern-central Massachusetts. Charlton resides in the French and Quinebaug watershed which is also a part of the Quinebaug and Shetucket Rivers Valley National Heritage Corridor, an organization developed to celebrate and conserve the region¦s resources for the preservation of a quality of life and place in this (Last Green Valley¦. Charlton is a rapidly growing town that is changing from a sleepy, bucolic town to a suburban, bedroom community. The town faces many issues common throughout the watershed. This report examines these key issues including hydrology, biodiversity and culture/history and synthesizes the findings in order to disclose possible development scenarios, and recommended key action steps.
