These materials are presented here largely as a reference for those individuals that attended a workshop.

This workshop was designed to provide a quick introduction to landscape pattern analysis using FRAGSTATS, a computer software program designed to compute a wide variety of landscape metrics for categorical map patterns, and to explore some issues regarding the use of landscape metrics to describe landscape structure. The files used in the workshop are included in the zip file below. This zip file is intended for those individuals attending the workshop, who will be familiar with its content.

• Data files (13 mb zip file) -- This is a complete set of all files used during the workshop, including all GIS data and FRAGSTATS files. To ensure compatability with embedded pathways in the case study exercise, download and install to the following directory: D:\fragstats\. The files should unzip to a folder named workshop containing several subfolders as used in the workshop.
• Documents (11 mb zip file containing pdfs) -- This is a complete set of the workshop documents (i.e., the background, guidelines, and case study portions of the workshop; identical to the document handed out at the workshop) as well as the two additional slide presentations that did not have accompanying documents, including the presentation on "metric insights" and the summary.

This workshop was designed to provide a quick introduction to landscape pattern analysis using FRAGSTATS, a computer software program designed to compute a wide variety of landscape metrics for categorical map patterns, and to explore some issues regarding the use of landscape metrics to describe landscape structure. In this context, we presented the workshop in several parts, as described in the workshop syllabus. All workshop data (the complete set of files) can be downloaded below. In addition, several sections of the workshop were aided by standard slide presentations, and these can be downloaded separately below. Note, a good deal of the workshop involves hands-on demonstration of FRAGSTATS, and the corresponding slide presentations were used to supplement or facilitate the hands-on work, and so may by confusing to view in isolation. In addition, these slide presentations are not annotated and therefore may be difficult to follow without the benefit of having been in the workshop. These slide presentations are presented here largely as a reference for those individuals attending the workshop.

• Complete workshop files (240 mb zip file) -- This is a complete set of all workshop files, including all GIS data layers, documents, presentations, FRAGSTATS software and files for case study exercise. To ensure compatability with embedded pathways in the case study exercise, download and install to the following directory: D:\fragstats\. The files should unzip to a folder named workshop containing several subfolders as follows:
  1. Documents -- contains pdf files for the workshop agenda and case study exercise.
  2. Fragstats -- contains all required and ancillary files used by Fragstats in the workshop.
  3. Grids -- contains all Arc Grids used in the workshop.
  4. Legends -- contains ArcView legends for effective display of the grids used in the workshop.
  5. Movies -- contains several movies (.avi) used in the workshop.
  6. Presentations -- contains all slide presentations used in the workshop in either an executable format or powerpoint format.
  7. Software -- contains the version of Fragstats software used in this workshop.
• Background Concepts Presentation (14 mb file) -- Executable slide presentation providing an overview of important conceptual issues related to landscape structure analysis, and definition of some terms essential to the proper use and understanding of FRAGSTATS.
• FRAGSTATS Analysis of Landscape Structure Presentation (1.5 mb file) -- Executable slide presentation facilitating hands-on instruction on the use of the FRAGSTATS software.
• Overview of Landscape Metrics Presentation (2 mb file) -- Executable slide presentation providing an introduction and overview of FRAGSTATS metrics.
• Landscape Metric Behavior Presentation (1.8 mb file) -- Powerpoint presentation on the quantitative behavior of selected landscape metrics across gradients of area and contagion based on neutral landscapes in comparison to real landscapes.
• Landscape Structure Gradients Presentation (1.6 mb file) -- Executable slide presentation on the components of landscape structure in real landscapes, including a description of a methodology for identifying independent landscape structure gradients -- a case study from western Massachusetts.
• Case Study Exercise (pdf file) -- Detailed step-by-step description of the case study exercise, including background information and a summary of major findings.
• Case Study Exercise Presentation (94 mb file) -- Executable slide presentation accompanying the case study exercise (hands-on application) used to illustrate the application of FRAGSTATS. The full-day workshop includes a single in-depth application involving quantifying habitat fragmentation under alternative land management scenarios.
• Summary Presentation (1.7 mb file) -- Executable slide presentation with a summary of key points regarding landscape pattern analysis with FRAGSTATS and future directions.
