Notes:
Not too surprisingly, the science and application of landscape pattern analysis
has evolved as well, and has undergone a number of significant transitions. Today
I will describe six major transitions and give examples of each, with the following
limitations:
First, there are a number of other significant transitions in landscape pattern
analysis, for example those associated with advances in pattern detection and
scaling techniques, that I will not discuss. I chose the six listed here in part
because a review of articles published in Landscaped Ecology between 1987-2003
revealed these to be important transitions and, in part, because my research
program has evolved along the lines of these particular transitions.
Second, these transitions are not independent, but I will treat them as so for
simplicity and for added emphasis.
Third, there are many good examples of these transitions, but I will draw largely
from my own research as a way of providing you with a glimpse into my research
program.
