Notes:
Let me start by saying how honored and privileged I am to be addressing this
Congress. When I received the invitation to give a plenary talk from Richard
Hobbs my first reaction was disbelief - that perhaps somebody was playing a cruel
joke on me. That soon changed to astonishment - after I realized the invitation was
sincere. Eventually that turned into alarm - bordering on panic - as I realized that I
could not turn down the honor and that I would have to come up with something
to say worthy of this Congress.
After dismissing all of my initial options I was forced to ponder the dilemma I was
in for quite some time. Eventually, I reasoned that most people know me for my
work developing the popular landscape pattern analysis software - FRAGSTATS -
and probably expect me to discuss something along these lines.
So, I decided to focus on the Evolving Science and Application of Landscape
Pattern Analysis. What follows is essentially my observations of the major
changes in the use of landscape metrics over the past couple of decades.
