I’ll start by outlining three scales at which we can think about vernal pool conservation. The first is the scale of the individual pool. This has been the traditional focus of vernal pool conservation. The key at this scale is to protect the pool basin and hydrology. Conservation efforts have included best management practices for forestry, and, in some states, the protection of certified vernal pools.
