Notes:
The second scale focuses on upland habitat. The importance of upland habitat for vernal pool breeding amphibians has been widely recognized in recent years. In Massachusetts, we protect a 30 m buffer around certified vernal pools, but this is primarily intended to protect pool hydrology. A number of studies have shown that most individuals of vernal pool breeding species move much further from pools than 30 m. Pools such as the one pictured here are likely to lose their amphibian populations.
