Sermin Tagil

Post-doctoral Research Associate

Sermin Tagil worked as a post-doc and visiting scholar in the Landscape Ecology Lab at the University of Massachusetts in 2007, where she studied the application of surface pattern metrics. She earned her PhD from the Department  of Geography at Ankara University, Turkey in 2004, where she studied the Physical Geography of Balikesir Plain. She received her MS from the Department of Geography at Ege University in 1998, where she studied wind energy and climate. She received her BS from the Department of Geography at Ege University in 1995. She is currently an associate professor in the Department of Geography at Balikesir University, Turkey.

During her post-doc, Sermin worked with Dr. McGarigal and graduate student Sam Cushman to evaluate the applicability of surface metrics (derived from the field of surface metrology) to the field of landscape ecology for the purpose of quantifying landscape structure under the landscape gradient model. Her work resulted in the following publication:

McGarigal K, S Tagil, and SA Cushman. 2009. Surface metrics: An alternative to patch metrics for the quantification of landscape structure. Landscape Ecology 24:433–450. (pdf)
