Maritza Mallek

Graduate Student (MS)

Maritza Mallek is currently an MS student in Environmental Conservation at the University of Massachusetts. Maritza earned her BA in 2008 from the Geography Department at the University of Chicago. She spent several years working for the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Park Service in invasive species and wilderness management in Idaho and California before beginning her MS program.

Maritza's research is focused on adapting and applying the landscape disturbance-succession model, RMLands, for use in the Sierra Nevada. She is working closely with staff from the Tahoe National Forest to characterize the vegetation and fire regimes of a subwatershed of the Yuba River. She will be quantifying departure of the current landscape from the historical range of variability based on a variety of metrics, and subsequently evaluating the impacts of alternative management scenarios.
