Joanna Grand earned her PhD from the Department of Environmental Conservation at the University of Massachusetts in 2004, where she developed habitat models and strategic conservation priorities for rare moth species and breeding birds in the pine barrens of southeastern Massachusetts. She received her MS from the School of Forestry and Environmental Sciences at Yale University in 1995, where she studied conservation biology. She received her BA in Psychology from Vassar College in 1990. She is currently a post-doctoral research fellow in the Landscape Ecology Lab in the Department of Environmental Conservation at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Joanna assists Dr. McGarigal and his students on a wide variety of projects in the Landscape Ecology Lab. However, Joanna is involved principally in the Conservation Assessment and Prioritization System (CAPS) and Designing Sustainable Landscapes (DSL) projects.

As a member of the CAPS team, Joanna heads up development and maintenance of the CAPS biotic database, a large relational database used to manage data collected on biota from hundreds of sites across the state of Massachusetts. Joanna is the principal architect of the database. In addition, she is involved in the acquisition and analysis of spatial data used in CAPS.

Joanna also works on the DSL project. The overall purpose of this project is to assess the capability of current and potential future landscapes within the extent of the northeastern United States to provide integral ecosystems and suitable habitat for a suite of representative species, and provide guidance for strategic habitat conservation.
