My whole perspective towards writing changed this past week. Usually writing is a very lonely endeavor, but Juniper allowed me the chance to meet like-minded people who were able to teach me stuff I never would have otherwise learned. I now have so many tips and ways of approaching writing in my heart that I can’t wait to start writing every day. My writing “pod” was like my family at Juniper, they supported me and became some of my closest friends. They were like-minded writers who learned alongside me—they became my go-to writing support group even after Juniper was over.
In the DIY Publishing Studio Course, I published a book! This will completely change the way I approach sharing my work in the future. I’ll definitely use the skills I learned in this course at home.
I thoroughly enjoyed the evening readings. Some I liked a lot better than others, but I learned something from all of them: how to give characters an effective voice and how simple or complexly brilliant words can be. The Q&As were an amazing experience and very eye-opening. I remember Mark Doty talking about where he goes to write, and Amy Hempel talking about how a story comes to her. It was very meaningful to hear these authors talk about those things and it is going to end up helping me with my writing.
Daily life at Juniper was definitely busy, but it was planned well; I was super grateful for the small amounts of free time. The best memory I have of the dorm was a night when 16 of us crammed into one room to share our work with each other and comment on it—a totally impromptu workshop. Juniper did a very good job treating us like “young adults.”
Being part of an intensive writing community was absolutely amazing! I felt that extra push to work even harder because I was surrounded by so many serious writers. Even though the week has reached its final climactic scene, the story is far from over. I would like to go on record saying: Gabrielle and Blair were incredible! Thank you so much for this opportunity, Juniper!!!
