The University of Massachusetts Amherst
Juniper Summer Writing Institute is happy to announce the Juniper
Institute for Young Writers, offering six days of writing workshops,
seminars, craft sessions, and readings by nationally recognized
authors. Students who have finished their junior or senior
years of high school are invited to apply.
The Juniper Institute for Young Writers joins the Juniper
Summer Institute for adults, now entering its third year. Younger
participants attend evening readings and select craft sessions
hosted by the adult program and participate in specialized
workshops and writing seminars geared toward younger writers.
Curriculum
Workshops
At the heart of the Institute are daily writing workshops lead
by award-winning poet James Haug. Together, poets and fiction
writers revise work in progress, generate new work, and form
a community of committed readers. Writers share and receive
feedback on their work, and with the workshop leader discuss
language, character, structure, voice, narrative, and other
elements of writing. The point is not so much to decide whether
a piece is good or bad but to uncover the reasons why readers
have the reactions they do. Enrollment is limited so that
every writer has ample opportunity to present his or her
work.
Writing Seminars
Daily writing seminars generate new work through writing exercises,
prompts, and discussion. Writers explore new styles and methods
and are given the chance to revise and reflect.
Craft Sessions
Craft sessions with faculty and writers in residence offer
the opportunity to discuss issues of craft and the writing
life, as well as evening readings, textual analysis, and
the creative process.
Readings
Hearing words from the page come alive in the voice of the
writer has the ability to transform our understanding of
prose and poetry. Each evening features readings of new work
by the acclaimed Institute Faculty and Writers in Residence.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. To apply, please
