Here’s what recent Institute participants had to say about different aspects of the program...

Overall Experience

It was the most rewarding and valuable thing I have done for myself as a writer in the last two years.

I had a great week. I met people I will continue to share my writing with. I thought both workshops and craft sessions were very well done. And the variation in the readings was really inspiring.

A+

I had an inspiring and exciting week.

The faculty, craft sessions, and readings were all great. There was one surprise though: I think the best thing I got out of this whole week is the connection with my workshop classmates and dorm neighbors. . . I think we’ll all continue to benefit from the Juniper Institute well into next year.

Oh, it was great. I was able to overcome writer’s block and even find more of my voice.

The Institute was marvelous. The mix of styles presented enlarging, to live in poetry intensely for six days, thrilling.

It was overwhelming, but in quite a positive way. The exchange of information, the feedback and productive comments came from every possible direction.

Really rewarding. And informative. And entertaining. And eye-opening.

Difficult, rigorous. I loved it.

A wonderful experience—very stimulating, enjoyable, fun.

Workshops

Stimulating, encouraging, collegial, inspiring.

workshop participants

Wonderful open and dynamic discussions.

I thought the quality of people’s comments was very high.

Thrilling.  Absolutely thrilling.

Workshops were extremely productive. We covered a lot of ground in one week, but managed never to be pressed for time.

The workshop was so helpful! Everyone was so open and accepting.

My brain was lit up in many different places. . .

Tremendous—I’ve never had such an intense workshop teacher. She really got me energized.

It was great to be moved outside my comfort zone and to experiment more. My workshop leader was a wonderful teacher, who is generous and wise and also rigorous!

Unparalleled.

There was a good blend of critique and instruction that ultimately, I think, bolstered the writers and motivated them to keep writing well after the workshop was over.

There was a collegial tone of mutual respect and delight in poetry.

I loved it. I learned so much and it’s stuff I know I will use.

I’ve been to a lot of workshops, but this is the best by far. I don’t think it could get any better.

An inspiring experience. I felt supported, encouraged, and came away motivated.

The experience was enriching, lively, profoundly useful.

Readings, Craft Sessions, and Consultations

Full of energy and very engaging.

They informed me on aspects of poetry writing that I never would have thought about.

For me, the readings served as a reminder of the mastery we are all trying to achieve.

Each reading had its own merit—windows into a whole universe of artistic experience!

The craft sessions and Q&As enlarged the total learning experience.

Not only did they highlight a broad diversity of excellence in writing, it also raised the bar for me as a writer. The craft sessions were serious, focused, yet enjoyable.

The readings were fun and mind-blowing.

I thought the craft sessions were excellent.

The readings were a wonderful experience—they taught powerful lessons in usages of language, rhythm, cadence, etc.

I liked hearing from writers of both genres. It got me thinking outside the box. Hearing some of the readings has changed the way I read both my own work and that of others.

My favorite part of the week was my manuscript consultation—very thorough, specific, kind with comments, insights and criticisms; very helpful to my writing.

Excellent.  I got what I came for, especially in the manuscript consultation, which made my week.

Organization & Logistics

The meals were excellent.

The meals were simply delicious! The dorms here are amazing.

Great [dorm] rooms, private space, convenient, thank god for A/C.

I felt well taken care of.

I appreciate how much work it must take to have such a complicated enterprise not only get off the ground, but soar.

I thought the organizers were great: friendly, encouraging, interested. I felt you guys went out of your way to create a warm atmosphere and I appreciate it.

Thank you so very much for a great conference!  You and your cohorts did a tremendous job.  For the sense of community that developed in a mere week you deserve kudos, yet you did so much more. One example, you assembled a terrific faculty.  Another, you provided a lovely positive presence of quiet intelligence that appeared to be much appreciated by all.
