Lesson 4: Aesthetics and Composition

Compositional Tools

Aesthetic theory can be fascinating. It can also be complicated

Happily, the tools of successful visual composition are simple to understand, if not always to execute.

The best way to improve your composition is to practice these techniques and experiment in your own visual storytelling. If you do that while analyzing professional work you admire, you'll develop a deeper understanding of composition and aesthetics.

Interview with Aprile Gallant

Aprile Gallant has been the Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs at the newly-rennovated Smith College Museum of Art since 2002. As a museum focused on education, Gallant and her colleagues often use Smith's collection of more than 16,000 works on paper as a tool to teach visual literacy and other topics.

In this video, Gallant shares four photographic prints from the museum's collection, and explores how the composition of each picture informs the larger story it conveys.
