Journalism uses a 3.0 GPA as a general guideline for admission. However, exceptions can be made to this rule, and you can read about them on the application to the major.
Students who were not admitted to the journalism major as incoming first year or transfer students will need to apply to journalism to become a major. To apply, complete and submit the online application.
You can also pick up and submit a paper application to become a major from the undergraduate advisor.
Here are the requirements for admission:
- An overall GPA of at least a 3.0.
- Completion of at least one full semester at UMass. Transfer students who want to apply during their first semester at UMass may apply if they can provide an unofficial transcript from their previous school with GPA.
- Completion of the application available above and in S414 Integrative Learning Center.
Any journalism courses already completed or currently enrolled in at the time of admission will be applied to the journalism requirements.
