Richard B. Newton
Program Director & Photography Instructor
Rick has been teaching photography and leading foreign study programs in Mexico, Belise, Guatemala, and Sicily for UMass since 1991. He holds a BFA in photography from Massachusetts College of Art and a BS and MS from UMass in Natural Resource Studies. He first went to Sicily in 1997 and since then can't seem to stay away. Sicily 2013 will be the sixteenth Journalism course that he has led to the island. Of course, Rick is solely concerned with the educational components of the experience and not at all interested in the awe inspiring landscape, the warm and friendly people, the fascinating history, and the extraordinary food and wines of Sicily.
Carol is Director of Development and Communications for the UMass Library. She came to our campus eight years ago to be editor of the UMass alumni magazine. She has been an editor and writer for magazines for 20 years. During her six years as a senior editor/writer at Yankee Publishing, Carol researched and wrote travel pieces for print, web, television, and radio. Earlier in her career, Carol lived on the Yukon River in Alaska, tending a sled-dog kennel; coauthored a guidebook, New England Camping, and wrote a monthly newspaper column "The Traveling Outdoorswoman." A native of New Hampshire, Carol is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire with a degree in Communication. Sicily 2013 will be Carol's third year teaching the writing track of the course.
