Student Media

Journalism majors are strongly encouraged to get involved with the campus media. Students are welcome at all levels, first-year to seniors. The campus media are student-run organizations. You cannot get academic or internship credit for your work, but you do get invaluable experience that can prepare you for future internships and jobs.

The Massachusetts Daily Collegian is published Monday through Friday during the University of Massachusetts' calendar semester. The Collegian is independently funded, operating on advertising revenue. Founded in 1890, the paper began as Aggie Life, became the College Signal in 1901, the Weekly Collegian in 1914 and the Tri-Weekly Collegian in 1956. WMUA NOW HIRING FOR 2008-2009 ACADEMIC YEAR
WMUA is now hiring department directors for the 2008-2009 school year. Earn valuable experience outside of the classroom in the exciting student radio community. Experience in Radio is NOT necessary. WMUA is currently accepting applications from undergrads for directors in DJ Training, Finance, Music, Music Library, News Editorial, News Operations, Office Coordinator, Outreach, Production, Publicity, Sports Operations, Sports Production, Technical, Underwriting, Visual Media. Applications and job descriptions are available at the WMUA office located in Room 105 of the Campus Center basement. Applications are due April 18. WMUA 91.1 FM is a federally licensed (non-commercial) broadcast facility serving Western Massachusetts, Northern Connecticut and Southern Vermont. Full-time undergraduate students at UMass manage WMUA. However, station members can consist of various members of the University (undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff), as well as people from the surrounding communities, who donate their time to help continue the day-to-day operations of the station. WMUA has been in operation since 1949, when it first started as an AM station. WMUA broadcasts music, news, sports and public affairs programming.

UVC-TV 19 is UMass’ student-run television station. Its mission is to serve as a training facility for all facets of video production, while providing undergraduate students with a welcoming environment in which to learn. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week on HSCN Channel 19 on the UMass campus (and soon it will be streaming live online--so UVC will be available to watch from anywhere in the world). Membership is open to any undergraduate student currently enrolled at the University. To become a member, simply stop by the station to fill out a membership form.
