The Associated Press Scholarship for Collegiate Sports Journalists The Associated Press Sports Editors sponsor four $1,500 scholarships to help motivate talented students to pursue a career in sports journalism. Collegiate sports journalists entering their sophomore, junior or senior years are eligible for the scholarship which will awarded based on the students' journalistic work, their academic record, financial need, and geography. The scholarships will be awarded to students from four different regions of the United States. The winners will be chosen by the APSE scholarship committee, which is chaired by Joe Sullivan, sports editor of the Boston Globe and includes editors from all sections of the United States. David W. Miller Award for Student Journalists

The David W. Miller award is in memory of a senior writer at The Chronicle of Higher Education who was killed by a drunk driver. He was only 35 years old. The award consists of a $1,000 prize and a certificate. Candidates should submit up to three samples of published work accompanied by a one-page letter describing the articles and why they were chosen for submission. The articles must have been published in a campus publication during the previous academic year. Candidates must have been undergraduate students at the time the articles were published. Messenger-Anderson Journalism Scholarship and Internship Program for GLBT students

The Messenger-Anderson Journalism Scholarship and Internship Program offers several $10,000 scholarships ($5,000 for the first year and $2,500 for the second and third years) to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students pursuing a degree in journalism and communications at an accredited four-year college or university. High school seniors and current undergraduate students are eligible to apply. A GPA of 2.8 or better is required. The award is sponsored by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF). Winners are required to participate in the Messenger-Anderson Scholarship Intern Program at NGLTF offices in Washington, DC, or New York City during the summer.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has awarded a grant to The Washington Center to promote public service journalism in Washington, D.C. The goal of the initiative is to expose students in journalism and mass communications to career options in public or civic journalism, which offers communities information directly and immediately relevant to people's daily lives. Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition: The collegiate reporting competition awards nine aspiring journalists a 12-day guided study tour to Japan and South Korea, an area of special interest to Roy W. Howard. Deadline for entering the 2008 Roy W. Howard competition, open to collegiate journalists, is postmark Feb. 28, 2008. Click here for 2008 rules and entry form for details. Winners will be announced March 17, and the trip will take place June 14-27, 2008.

Students interested in a career in over-the-air broadcasting are encouraged to apply for a $1,500 scholarship from the MBA. You must be a Massachusetts resident and currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a broadcast program at an accredited two or four year college. You don't have to go to school in the Bay State to apply. Apply by downloading and completing the scholarship application found at the website or by calling the MBA office at 800-471-1875.

Awards of $2,500, $1,750, $1,000, $750 and $250 to undergraduate students pursuing careers in journalism. You must be entering your junior or senior year in college next fall. THE AL MUAMMAR SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ARAB-AMERICAN STUDENTS PURSUING A CAREER IN JOURNALISM
The Washington DC-based Arab American Institute Foundation sponsors a scholarship program for Arab American students pursuing a career in journalism. Four scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded annually by the Arab American Institute Foundation to selected students of Arab descent who are committed to a career in journalism. Applicants must have a grade-point average of at least 3.30. Academic achievement, financial need and community service will be considered. Deadline: March 3, 2008

National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association's 2007 Excellence in Student Journalism Award
First Place Cash Prize: $1,000
NLGJA's Excellence in Student Journalism Award celebrates outstanding work done by a student for a campus or student news organization. In addition to extensive recognition in NLGJA press releases and on the organization's Web site, the winning students will also be spotlighted during NLGJA's annual National Convention.
Peter Agris Memorial Scholarships for students of Greek Heritage
The Peter Agris Memorial Scholarships are offered to graduate and undergraduate students of journalism or communications who are of Greek heritage. The $5,000 scholarships are given by the Alpha Omega Council of New England in honor of its founder, the late Peter Agris, also founder and publisher of The Hellenic Chronicle, for fifty years the premier Greek American national English-language weekly newspaper. Criteria: Greek American heritage; current full-time enrollment as a journalism or communications major at the graduate or undergraduate level in an accredited college or university; active participation in school, community, church organizations; a minimum of a 3.0 GPA and demonstrated financial need. Fulbright Scholar Beginning Professional Journalism Award
The Fulbright Scholar Beginning Professional Journalism awards offer young American journalists at the beginning of their careers the opportunity to spend 10 months in Germany conducting research and working in German print or broadcast media. Grantees receive round-trip travel and a monthly stipend of 1,300 Euro, plus an allowance for incidentals and dependents (if applicable).
Beginning professional journalists or recent graduates in journalism or related fields are eligible to apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and have a level of German sufficient for research and work in German media. Thomas L. Philips Collegiate Journalism Awards
The Institute on Political Journalism sponsors the Thomas L. Philips Collegiate Journalism Awards. The awards recognize excellence in well-sourced news stories or analytical reports in collegiate publications that demonstrate an understanding of the basic ideas that support a free society, including freedom of the press, freedom of speech and free-market economic principles. First, second and third place prizes are $5,000, $2,500 and $1,000 respectively. Please visit the website for further information on entry guidelines.
Robert Walker Scholarships for Christian Journalism Christian Life Missions annually award 5 $1,000 Robert Walker Scholarships in June for 5 qualified journalism students with a 3.5 gpa or higher. Christian Life Missions is the non profit ministry arm of Charisma
