Admission to Major
Journalism major is required to restrict the number of majors we are allowed to admit. Students who were not admitted to the Journalism major as incoming freshman will need to apply to Journalism to become a major.
Requirements for Admission:
--An overall GPA of at least a 3.0.
--Completion of at least one full semester at UMass. (Transfer students who want to apply during their first semester at UMass may apply if they can provide an unofficial transcript from their previous school with GPA.)
--Journalism must be your primary major at least until the first semester of your senior year, if your second major is in the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences or in the College of Humanities & Fine Arts.
--Completion of information sheet available in 108 Bartlett.
New majors are accepted each semester up to the beginning of registration for the next semester. Please provide verification of your GPA when applying (an unofficial SPIRE transcript or degree report is fine). Any Journalism courses already completed or currently enrolled in at the time of admission will be applied to the Journalism requirements.
NOTE: Journalism is a major where students should expect to take the majority of their Journalism courses during their junior and senior years. We recommend that you make progress in fulfilling the University’s General Education requirements and the Global Education requirement for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences during your freshmen and sophomore years. In most cases you will have ample opportunity to complete the Journalism major and the required minor in your junior and senior year.
We hope to provide quality classes to our majors. We have limited enrollment in the Journalism major to match the size of our faculty. In our experience, the best writing classes are small and the most interesting seminars enroll just enough students to create vigorous debate and conversation.
COMMUNICATION AND JOURNALISM - Journalism discourages students from doing a double major in Communication because journalists need a broad background in the liberal arts and social sciences. However, if you want to pursue a major in Communication, you must write an explanation of why you want to do so. This will be reviewed by the Journalism Director. Please note that students who do pursue a second major with Communication must also complete a minor in another field.
