HOWARD M. ZIFF, professor emeritus and founder of the Journalism Department, holds a bachelor’s degree from Amherst College (1952) and also studied at the School of Journalism at Columbia University. Ziff was a reporter and bureau chief for Stars and Stripes in Korea from 1954-55. He worked as a reporter, assistant city editor, editorial writer, and night editor at the Chicago Daily News (1958-68). He has taught at the University of Illinois, Columbia University Program for Minority Journalists, and at UMass-Amherst since 1971. He was a Fulbright professor at the University of Salzburg, Austria, in 1982-83, visiting professor at Janos Pannonius University in Pecs, Hungary, in 1987, and consultant to the University of Botswana in 1996-97. Ziff continues to teach ethics, and editorial writing.
