David Perkins
is a writer, editor, teacher and classical singer who moved to the Valley in 2002. He has worked as a magazine editor (The New Leader and Next magazines) and prizewinning reporter for The Anniston (Ala.) Star and The News and Observer (Raleigh, N.C.). He was The News and Observer’s book review editor and chief arts writer for several years before founding Brightleaf, a quarterly review of books and new writing of the South, which he edited and published from 1998-2002. He is the author and editor of several books, including Raleigh: A Living History of North Carolina’s Capital and Books of Passage: Books That Changed Writers Lives. He reviews concerts and writes about classical music regularly for The Boston Globe and other publications. He is artistic director of Chamber Music at Wistariahurst, a series he founded in 2006. He has also taught at Duke and N.C. State universities. He has a B.A. from Yale University and an MA in English from Cambridge University.
