Recent developments in Israel and Palestine

Panel discussion
April 4, 2006

In a region characterized by historic events, the early months of 2006 were especially dramatic and, for many people, extremely confusing.

This panel discussion provided an opportunity to explore the new political landscape in Israel and Palestine after the Israeli disengagement from Gaza; the surprising victory of Hamas in the recent Palestinian elections; the victory of the new Kadima Party in Israel (following Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's stroke); and the prospects for peace in the region.

Panelists:

Prof. Jay Berkovitz (Judaic & Near Eastern Studies)

Prof. Tayeb El-Hibri (Judaic & Near Eastern Studies)

Prof. David Mednicoff (Legal Studies)

This public forum was held in conjunction with Prof. Berkovitz' course "Modern Israel: History, Society, and Change" (Judaic 366) and was sponsored by the Department of Judaic & Near Eastern Studies and the Office of Jewish Affairs.
