Undergraduate Program

General information

Students may pursue a broad curriculum in general Italian Studies or combine Italian Studies with a particular emphasis. Courses focusing on Italian Studies offered in other departments may be included with the approval of the Undergraduate Adviser, Andrea Malaguti. Once you've made up your mind to pursue a degree in Italian Studies, it is very important that you declare your major right away.

Requirements

The Major

The prerequisite to the Italian Studies major is proficiency in Italian at the elementary level: Elementary Italian I and II (ITAL 110 and 120) or Intensive Elementary Italian (ITAL 126 or ITAL 126H).

Majors must then complete 36 credits above the 100 level, including:

Preparatory Grammar (6 credits): Intermediate Italian I and II (ITAL 230 and 240) or Intensive Intermediate Italian (ITAL 246).

Two core courses (6 credits): 371 Advanced Grammar and Composition; and one introductory course in the selected emphasis (e.g., 324 Introduction to Italian Literary Studies I or 325 Introduction to Italian Literary Studies II).

Eight area courses (24 credits). No more than two may be conducted in English or at another 5-College institution without special permission.

The Minor

The minor in Italian Studies requires completion of 21 credits above the 100 level, including:

Preparatory Grammar (6 credits): Intermediate Italian I and II (ITAL 230 and 240) or Intensive Intermediate Italian (ITAL 246).

324 Introduction to Italian Literary Studies I or 325 Introduction to Italian Literary Studies II

371 Advanced Grammar and Composition

Three electives (9 credits) in Italian Studies.

Minors may also be able to take further electives from any one emphasis area. However, no more than one may be conducted in English or at another 5-College institution without special permission.

The Honors Program

Students enrolled in the Honors Program through Commonwealth College may pursue an Honors Track in Italian Studies. For further information, contact your Commonwealth College adviser or Prof. Malaguti.

Study Abroad and Thatcher

Students who major in Italian are encouraged to attend the University's various study abroad programs in Italy. The courses they take there apply to areas of emphasis in the major. Majors are likewise encouraged to participate in the Thatcher Program.

Five Colleges

The UMass Italian Program cooperates closely with the other two Italian programs in the Five Colleges: those at Mount Holyoke College and Smith College. Italian Students in each of these three programs may take courses at the other two campuses, and credits may be counted toward their degree. Consult your adviser for details.
