Export a Forum in Moodle

With a single click, Moodle allows you to export and download an entire forum, a discussion (thread), or a single post. This feature can be especially helpful when you want to capture or print all students contributions to a Standard discussion.

Export Whole Forum

Follow the steps below for all discussion types except Single simple discussions.

For a Single simple discussion forum, your best option, instead of using Export whole forum, is to use the Print command in your browser (File > Print) to print the discussion page, and in the printing dialog choose to print as a PDF (this will create a PDF file).

  1. On your course page, click the name of the forum for which you would like to download contributions. The Forum page will open.
  2.  At the top left of the page, click Export whole forum. The Configure exported data page will open.
  3. In the Available export formats drop-down menu, choose HTML and click Next. The Please confirm this export page will open.
  4. Click Continue to confirm your settings. The contents of the forum will be downloaded to your computer in HTML format. You can open, view and print the page using a web browser.

Export a Discussion Thread

  1. On your course page, click the name of the forum for which you would like to download contributions. The Forum page will open.
  2. Click the name of the discussion thread you would like to download. The Discussion page will open.
  3.  At the top left of the page, click Export whole discussion. The Configure exported data page will open.
  4. From the Available export formats drop-down menu, choose HTML and click Next. The Please confirm this export page will open.
  5. Click Continue to confirm your settings. The contents of the discussion thread will be downloaded to your computer in HTML format. You can open, view and print the page using a web browser.

Export a Single Post or Topic

  1. On your course page, click the name of the forum for which you would like to download contributions. The Forum page will open.
  2. Navigate to a single post which you would like to download. At the bottom right of the post, click Export to portfolio. The Configure exported data page will open.
  3. In the Available export formats drop-down menu, choose HTML and click Next. The Please confirm this export page will open.
  4. Click Continue to confirm your settings. The post will be downloaded to your computer in HTML format. You can open, view and print the page using a web browser.
