The technical staff in the IT Help Center are prepared to answer questions regarding supported applications. We also offer malware removal, pre-puchase consultations, and data recovery and destruction services to members of the UMass Amherst community.
IT Help Center experts are available in our Help Center, Call Center, and Repair Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, except when the university is closed due to holidays, administrative closings, or inclement weather. Data Transfers for New or Reformatted Computers
All members of the University of Massachusetts Amherst community are responsible for backing up critical data. Options include secure file servers, physically secure hard drives, and some online file storage solutions. Our Repair Center offers backup and data migration services for a fee. Enterprise Desktop Support provides Data Migration for New, Recycled or Reformatted Computers to their contracted clients.
Departments must choose a storage solution for all sensitive data available to them. UMass Amherst IT also offers a secure storage service for a fee. Contact the IT Help Center to discuss the best storage option(s) for your department.
UMass Amherst IT strongly recommends that faculty, staff, and students transfer all sensitive data from laptops and portable storage media to a more secure alternative, and physically secure all areas where sensitive data is stored (e.g., locked cabinets).
Security Checkups & Malware Detection
IT Help Center experts can scan and usually clean a virus-infected machine. Malware is very difficult to uninstall. Protecting your computer against these types of malicious software is much easier than having to disinfect it. For this reason, we recommend that you install our free anti-virus software. Visit the Security Center for more information about securing your devices, guard against online fraud, and protect personal and university data.
Software & Operating System Installations
UMass Amherst IT works with software publishers to provide the UMass Amherst community with free and low-cost software. IT Help Center experts can answer questions about supported software and advise you on new software purchases. In our Help Center, consultants can assist you with downloading and creating bootable media on your Windows or OSX machine for installing operating systems or you can have your machine serviced in our Repair Center.
Data Recovery & Destruction
Damaged machines, devices, and storage media can be brought in without an appointment. Consultants will scan the media with a data recovery utility and attempt to save the data. Missing or damaged data on hard drives (desktop or laptop computer) may require advanced data recovery solutions, which may incur a fee.
Data Destruction services are available to departments, faculty, and staff with a convenient, no cost way to destroy and dispose of hard drives, backup tapes, and other magnetic media that contain sensitive or confidential information. This service is designed to help university departments comply with state and federal laws (e.g., FERPA, HIPPA) and university policies.
