Access to Moodle for Co-Instructors and Other Instructional Staff [1]
Find out how to obtain access to Moodle for co-instructors, colleagues or assistants helping out with your Moodle course.
Your Co-instructor Needs Access to Moodle
If you and your colleague share responsibility for all aspects of the course (e.g., instruction and grading) they should also have the role of Primary Instructor in SPIRE. To obtain Moodle access for a co-instructor, confirm with the Academic Scheduling Representative in your department that your co-instructor is listed in SPIRE as a Primary Instructor (PI). (Graduate students cannot be Primary Instructors for classes numbered 500 and above.)
- Primary Instructors associated with a class in SPIRE are given the role of Teacher in Moodle and receive unlimited access to course design, teaching, and grading tools.
Note: The process of listing instructors in SPIRE may take three (3) business days or longer. Once SPIRE is updated with the latest information, your colleague will automatically receive the role of Teacher in your Moodle Course.
Other Instructional Staff in Your Class Need Access to Moodle
Some courses require librarians or other faculty members to obtain access to Moodle. For these individuals, confirm with your Academic Scheduling Representative that they are listed in SPIRE as a Section Assistant. A Section Assistant coordinates student projects, grades assignments, or holds office hours, but does not teach.
- Section Assistants are given the role of Teacher in Moodle and receive unlimited access to course design, teaching, and grading tools.
Note: The process of listing Section Assistants in SPIRE may take three (3) business days or longer. Once SPIRE is updated with the latest information, your Section Assistant will automatically receive the role of Teacher in your Moodle Course.
Non-instructional Assistants Need Designer Access to Moodle
An instructor can arrange for colleagues, staff, or student assistants who are not enrolled, and do not need to teach or grade student submissions, to have Course Designer access to a Moodle course.
- Course Designers can add resources, activities, and blocks, but cannot interact with students in the course and do not have access to the gradebook.
To obtain access to your Moodle course for these individuals, fill out the Course Designer Access to Moodle [2]request form.
Note: Adding Course Designer access is a manual process and may take up to three (3) business days.
Note: To grant Course Designer access to your enrolled Teaching Assistants, you do not need any form. For instructions on adding Course Designer role to enrolled users, see Access to Moodle for Teaching Assistants [3].
