Campus Wireless Infrastructure Patched Against New Cybersecurity Threat (Krack Attack)

On Monday, October 16, 2017, UMass Amherst Information Technology applied security patches to the campus wireless infrastructure in response to a new cybersecurity threat targeting wireless networks (Krack Attack). Krack attacks exploit a flaw in the WPA2 wireless protocol, enabling attackers to intercept passwords, emails, and other data, and in some cases, to inject ransomware or other malicious content into a website a client is visiting. Major vendors have released a patch or are in the process of doing so. 

New Information Security Service (Multi-Factor Authentication) Available for HR Direct

Members of the campus community who access Direct Deposit or W2 information using the HR Direct Self-Service portal will be required to sign up for a new information security service called multi-factor authentication and log in to HR Direct using multi-factor authentication. Multi-factor authentication increases security by requiring more than one step to confirm a person’s identity when logging in to computer systems, applications, and networks.

Security Alert! Phishing Scam Targets UMass Amherst Community

On September 25th, 2017, a new fraudulent phishing message with the subject "ITS Announcement - Firewall project completed" began targeting UMass Amherst email users. The email appears to have been sent by "Shana Leonard," notifies the recipient "The ongoing firewall project that has been on for the past one month has just been completed," and contains a link to the "Firewall Portal." The links in the message direct the recipient to a fraudulent version of the UMass Exchange login page.
