The Government Communication Networks Project

Intra- and inter-governmental communication networks are critical to the efficient use of information in public policy development and administration. In the current project, my collaborators and I seek to understand 1) the dynamics underlying the development and evolution of government communication network structure, and 2) the micro- and macro-level consequences of government communication network structure. Using numerous public records requests, we are currently constructing a database of email archives from North Carolina county governments, which permit detailed comparative analysis of government communication patterns. With additional support, we will be able to expand our data collection efforts into other states and levels of government, as well as gather crucial auxiliary data.
